Travis Named MAC East Player of the Week
February 26 | Men's Basketball
CLEVELAND - University of Akron senior forward Romeo Travis (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary HS) was named Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
It is the second time in as many weeks a Zips cager has been given the award and the fourth occasion this season. UA forward Jeremiah Wood (Akron, Ohio/Central-Hower HS) was the recipient last week as well as on Jan. 29, and guard Dru Joyce (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary HS) was recognized on Dec. 26.
This is the fourth time in
Travis's career he has been honored as such (Jan. 9, 2006/Jan. 3,
2005/Jan. 17, 2005).
Travis averaged 26.0 points, 9.5
rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals as the Zips posted a 1-1
record in league play last week. He also averaged 71.4 percent
(15-of-21) from the floor and 70.0 percent (21-of-30) from the
free-throw line in the two outings.
In Saturday's 93-87 Senior Night win over Bowling Green, which
clinched a first-round bye in next week's league tournament, he had
a career-high 37 points and season-high 11 rebounds to go with
three assists, one blocked shot and one steal in 32 minutes as a
starter. Travis went 10-of-13 (1-for-1 behind the arc) from the
field and 16-of-23 from the line in registering his first
double-double of the season and 13th of his career.
In Wednesday's 64-62 overtime loss at Miami (Ohio) he scored 15
points, grabbed eight boards and had three steals and two assists
in 37 minutes as a member of the starting five. Travis went 5-of-8
from the floor and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe.
Travis, a candidate for MAC Player-of-the-Year, leads the Zips in scoring this season (15.0 ppg/seventh in MAC), and ranks 13th on UA's career scoring chart with 1,402 points (116 games). He is also the program's all-time blocked shots leader, with 144 (team-high 44 blocks/1.7 bpg this season/second in MAC), while his 738 career rebounds is ninth best all-time in school history. His 5.5 rebounds-per-game is second best on the squad and ranks 10th amongst his conference brethren.
Central Michigan's Giordan Watson was named the West Division Player of the Week.
Akron plays at Duquesne tonight at 7 p.m. EST, before closing out the regular season with road games at Buffalo on Thursday and rival Kent State on Sunday.
