Rifle Tops U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Wins Second Straight
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The University of Akron rifle team posted its second-straight victory on Saturday when it topped the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 4580-4342.
The match was owned by Zips sophomore Victoria Brown who swept the competition with top gun honors in both smallbore and air rifle.
In the smallbore, Brown fired a 574 out of a possible 600. Rounding out the top three in that category for the Zips was senior Zachary Szabo (571) and junior Adam Auclair (568). Szabo tallied a perfect score of 200 in the prone position.
"I am very proud of the team's accomplishments at this match," Akron head coach Newt Engle said. "We had several people shooting at or near personal best levels."
In the air rifle division, for the second week in a row Brown and senior Sarah Benjamin both broke into the 580s, with Brown grabbing a 582 and Benjamin a 581.
"The team has been working very hard and the payoff is a match like this which is our third-highest overall score of the season," Engle said.
The weekend of Feb. 11 will be busy for the Zips. On Saturday, the squad travels to Ohio State for a 2 p.m. ET contest and on Sunday plays host to Rose Hulman Institute at 9 a.m. in Schrank Hall South.
