Men's Soccer Heads to The Golden State for CSUN Labor Day Classic

AKRON, Ohio –
After making NCAA history last weekend, The No. 2 University of Akron men's soccer team will head to the Golden State for the 2011 Cal State Northridge Labor Day Classic where it will face off against Cal State Fullerton Thursday and the host Matadors  Saturday.

The Zips will kick off against Fullerton at 7:30 p.m. (ET) and Northridge at 10:00 p.m. (ET)

Poll Position
• Akron will enter play ranked No. 2 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll, which is the only poll recognized by the NCAA.
• The Zips are also ranked highly in the other four major polls, including a No. 2 designation by Soccer Times and a No. 3 ranking by College Soccer News, Top Drawer Soccer and Soccer America.

About Cal State Fullerton
• The Titans went 7-12-2 last season with a 4-6-0 mark in the Big West Conference (fourth out of seven).
• Fullerton, which returns eight starters and 14 letterwinners, defeated Hope International, 1-0, in its first game of the season on a 78th-minute goal by freshman Ian Ramos.
• Akron is 0-1 all-time against the Fullerton, which defeated the Zips, 1-0, at the UCLA Met Life Classic in 1991. The Titans were picked to finish third in the 2011 Big West preseason coaches poll.

About Cal State Northridge
• The Matadors went 3-14-2 last season with a 2-7-1 mark in the Big West Conference (seventh out of seven).
• Northridge used a number of starting lineups last year and returns 12 players with starting experience. The Matadors opened the season with a 2-0 victory at home over Canisius behind goals from Chris Smith and Christian Gonzalez.
• Akron is 1-0 all-time against Northridge, after earning a 3-0 victory over the Matadors last season at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field. Northridge was picked to finish fifth in the 2011 Big West preseason coaches poll.

Zips Reset
• Akron began its national title defense in grand fashion last weekend with a 5-0 victory over Cleveland State in a contest that broke the NCAA's record for longest home unbeaten streak (40 games). For more about the historic run, please see Page 5.
• Preseason All-American Darren Mattocks, who was consequently named to National Teams of the Week by College Soccer News, Top Drawer Soccer and Soccer America, scored a pair of goals and assisted another in front of a record crowd of 5,241 fans at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field.   
• For the game, Akron out-shot CSU 16-4, including a 10-1 margin on frame.
Road Warriors
• Akron is a combined 25-4-5 on the road and at neutral sites – including postseason play – since 2008.  
• The Zips have been defeated just once during its last 25 (21-1-3) regular-season road matches.
