Football to Face Appalachian State in 2016 and '17

AKRON, Ohio
– The University of Akron and Appalachian State have agreed to a two-game football series in 2016 and 2017. The Zips will play host to the Mountaineers at InfoCision Stadium – Summa Field on Sept. 24, 2016, while ASU will take on UA at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, N.C., on Sept. 16, 2017.

The 2016 meeting will be the first between the two programs on the gridiron.

On July 1, 2014, Appalachian State will become a member of the Sun Belt Conference and transition to the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The Mountaineers have played in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) since 1982 and won three-straight national championships in 2005-07.

Akron's non-conference slate in 2016 also features previously announced road contests at Wisconsin (Sept. 10) and Marshall (Sept. 17). The Zips' 2017 non-league schedule includes a road trip to Penn State (Sept. 2), also previously announced.
