Akron Men's Soccer Announces Challenging Spring Slate

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Men's Soccer team is set to face a challenging six-match spring exhibition schedule, one that includes a pair of games at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field, Zips' sixth-year head coach Jared Embick announced on Monday.
Akron is set to return four starters in 2018, including senior goalkeeper Ben Lundt (Berlin, Germany), redshirt junior Skye Harter (Copley, Ohio), junior Marcel Zajac (Mississauga, Ontario) and sophomore Daniel Strachan (Lakewood, Ohio) from a squad that captured Mid-American Conference tournament title en route to advancing to the College Cup for the fifth time in program history on the strength of an overall record of 18-4-2 mark during the 2017 campaign.
The Zips will open their spring slate traveling to Pittsburgh, Pa., to square off versus the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the USL (United Soccer League) on Sunday, Feb. 25. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
Akron returns to Pennsylvania a week later to battle Penn State on Saturday, March 3 at 4 p.m. The Nittany Lions under the direction of new head coach Jeff Cook will look to rebound after registering a 5-10-2 mark in 2017.
The Zips travel down I-71 to battle the Columbus Crew in a closed exhibition tilt on Sunday, March 11 at 11 a.m. The contest with the Crew is a closed scrimmage and spectators will not be permitted to watch the action.
In the first of two true home contests on the spring campaign, Akron will host FC Porto Canada on March 16 at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field in a 7 p.m. tilt.
Akron opens the month of April battling the University of Charleston on April 7 in a 3 p.m. contest that will be played at the National Youth Football and Sports Complex (Field No. 3) at the Professional Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
The Golden Eagles posted a 21-1-2 record a year ago en route to capturing the Division II National Title after advancing to the title game for the third time in the last four campaigns.
The Zips close out their spring schedule hosting Maryland, on April 22 at 7 p.m. at FirstEnergy Stadium - Cub Cadet Field.
The Terrapins advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 17th consecutive campaign and 37th time overall a season ago on the strength of a 10-5-4 mark, including posting a 5-1-2 ledger in the Big Ten Conference.
All spring exhibition contests at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field are open to the public and free of charge.
