Zips Swimming and Diving Continues Its Reign at the Zippy Invitational

AKRON, Ohio- The University of Akron swimming and diving team continued its reign at the Zippy Invitational as the Zips defended their home pool and captured their fourth-consecutive invitational crown after the three days of competition at the Ocasek Natatorium.

Following the three-day invitational, the Zips won the women's field with a total of 2,59.5 points, followed by Buffalo (1,534.5) in second, and Bowling Green with 1,203 for third. On the men's side, Oakland came out on top with 2,119.5 points, second place went to St. Bonaventure with 1,368.5, and Niagara came in third with 1,197.

The invitational consisted of 20 events for both men and women. Out of those 20 events, Akron took home 13 first-place finishes and garnered 25 top three places. Throughout the weekend, the Zips broke five Mid-American Conference records, nine meet records, and seven ONAT records.

A new day came with success in the pool for Akron as the Zips broke another Mid-American Conference record in the 200 breaststroke. Senior Paloma Marrero Munoz (Merida, Spain) crushed the old record  (2:09.79) clocking in at a time of 2:08.51, which earned her the new program, meet and pool fastest time.

Freshman Brooke Lamoureux (Trenton, Ontario) went out and set a new program-best (16:32.40) in the mile (1,650 yards), beating the old record which was 16:37.22. During the 1000 yard mark of the race, Lamoureux also set a new school record of 10:00.25.

In the 200 fly event, the Zips earned the top three spots with freshman Paulina Nogaj (Radom, Poland) claiming the top spot (1:58.20), followed by sophomore Mackenzie Vargas (Roseville, Cali.) (2:00.23) claiming second, and senior Susan Franz (Canton, Ohio) closing out third with a 2:00.47 time. Junior Sadie Fazekas (Windsor, Ontario) placed second in the 100 freestyle with a 49.11 clock in time, which was just .02 off from claiming the school record.

The Zips closed their annual invitation in Akron fashion by setting a new meet and pool record in the 400 freestyle relay. The combination of Fazekas, sophomore Morgan Waggoner (Fremont, Ohio), sophomore Ellie Nebraska (Columbus, Ohio), and Franz turned in a time of 3:18.94, which is now the second-fastest time in the program.

Akron steps away from competition for a month before returning to action on Jan. 13 as the Zips go head-to-head with the Rockets in Toledo, Ohio.
