AKRON,Ohio- The four-time defending Mid-American Conference champions Akron swimming and diving team was back in the pool at the Ocasek Natatorium for its 2017-18 season-opener as the Zips swam away with the competition defeating Youngstown State, 188-98, Friday evening.

In the first event of the new season, the 400 medley, the Akron relay team of junior Madison Myers (Akron, Ohio), senior Paloma Marrero Munoz  (Merida, Spain), freshman Paulina Nogaj , and junior Sadie Fazekas (Windsor, Ontario) garnered a first-place finish clocking in a time of 3:42.58.

The Zips went on to sweep the top-three spots in the next three events (1,000 free, 200 free, 100 back).

In the 1,000 free, sophomore Mackenzie Vargas (Roseville, Cali.) touched the wall first with a time of 10:38.03, followed by freshman Paula Garcia (Madrid, Spain) (10:43.07).

The 200 freestyle was won by Nogaj with a time of 1:52.24, followed by Munoz (1:53.44), and freshman Brooke Lamoureux (Trenton, Ontario) close behind in 1:54.97.

In the 100 back, Fazekas and sophomore Morgan Waggoner (Fremont, Ohio) swam the event in 1:06.48 and 1:07.18, to place first and second, respectively.

Vargas took the top-time in the 200 butterfly, touching in at a time of 2:04.22, with sophomore Jessica Bonezzi (Wooster, Ohio) coming in second with a time of 2:05.53. Senior Alisa Tyspin (Gan Yavne, Israel) completed the event with a top-three time of 2:15.56.

Akron took the top-two spots in the 50 freestyle. The Zips were led by Myers swimming the sprint in 23.76, followed by sophomore Ellie Nebraska  (Columbus, Ohio) with a 24.59 time.

On the boards in the one-meter dive, sophomore Katelyn Applin (Dansville, N.Y.) scored the Zips nine points with a first-place finish and a score of 241.20. Karly Crail (Edgewood, Ky.) completed the diving event with a top-three score of 238.20.

After the initial round of diving, Nogaj took her first top-finish of her collegiate career with a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle (51.23). The Zips went on to take top place in the four-straight events. Myers placed first in the 200 back (2:05.01), sophomore Jackie Pash (Carmel, Ind.) owned the top spot in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.02), Fazekas won her second even in the 500 free (4:58.71), and Waggoner was home first in the 100 fly (58.32).

Junior Karly Crail (Edgewood, Ky.) then claim the top-score in the three-meter dive with a tally of 222.38.

Akron closed out the meet with a first-place finish in the 400 IM and the top-spot in the 200 freestyle.

The Zips are back in action Saturday, Oct. 28, at 2 p.m. for a conference dual, as Akron will host Miami (Ohio) at the Ocasek Natatorium.
