COLLEGE STATION, Texas – University of Akron sophomore Lucy Bryan (Bristol, England) garnered first-team All-America accolades earning a seventh-place finish in the women's pole vault on the final day of the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Texas A&M University at Gilliam Indoor Stadium on Saturday, March 10.
"The NCAA Championships are amazing, some of the performances are the best in the world," Akron head coach Dennis Mitchell commented. "To get out of here with three All-Americans (first team) is a great honor. Lucy (Bryan) looked good jumping, but could not quite get the big bar."
By virtue of its weekend performances which included a trio of first-team All-America honorees, Akron extended its streak as one of only 10 programs nationally to have scored in both the men's and women's team competitions at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships since 2014. The Zips are the lone non Power-5 Conference institution included on that list.
Akron joins Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana State and Texas A&M from the Southeastern Conference, Oregon and Southern California from the Pac-12 Conference and Texas from the Big 12 Conference. Not represented on the list are schools from the Atlantic Coast and Big Ten Conferences.
As a team, the Akron women's squad finished tied for 32nd with seven points, while the men's team placed 42nd with five points.
Bryan began her competition missing the opening height of 13-5.75 (4.11m) on her initial attempt before clearing the bar on her second chance.
She followed bettering bars of 13-9.74 (4.21m) and 14-1.75 (4.31m) on her first runs at each height.
With nine vaulters remaining in the competition, Bryan eclipsed 14-3.50 (4.36m) on her initial attempt to move into a tie for third place.
The bar was then placed at 14-5.50 (4.41m) with seven competitors moving on and Bryan came up short on her opening attempt at the mark. She was unable to clear the bar on her final two attempts and completed the competition with a seventh-place performance and first-team All-America accolades for the second time in her Zips' career.
Akron now turns its attention to the outdoor campaign where the Zips will open their season at the Roadrunner Invitational hosted by Texas at San Antonio on March 23-24.
