UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – University of Akron track and field redshirt junior Mackenzie Andrews (Toowoomba, Australia) turned in a record-breaking performance in the women's elite mile to highlight the Zips' performances on the final day of the Penn State National on Saturday, Jan. 27.
Akron finished the two-day event winning four events, including both the men's and women's 4x400 relays, and turning in 12 top-three efforts.
"We had a few good marks this weekend," Zips' head track and field coach Dennis Mitchell commented. "Matt (Ludwig) had his first look at 19 feet in the pole vault, while Mackenzie (Andrews) significantly broke the school record of a five-time All-American. We cannot wait to compete at home in front of our home crowd next weekend in what looks like it is shaping up to be a good meet."
Andrews established a school-record time of 4:42.42 en route to finishing second in the women's elite mile. Her time shattered the previous school mark of 4:48.19 set by Beata Rudzinska on Feb. 21, 2004, and represented the 10th-best time in the NCAA this season.
