Women's Tennis Set for Pair of Road Matches

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips women's tennis team returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 4 with a pair of road matches against St. Bonaventure and Niagara in Olean, N.Y. UA faces the Bonnies at 10 a.m. and the Purple Eagles in the afternoon.

The Zips currently sit at 1-2 on the season, while Niagara is 1-1 and St. Bonaventure is 1-3.

Last time out, Akron dropped a close 4-3 decision to West Virginia on Saturday, Jan. 28.

"It will be good to get back on the court for a match after last weekend's disappointing finish. I am optimistic that our efforts to correct some areas of concern will pay off as the season progresses," said head coach Brandon Padgett.

Junior Sophia Geier, the reigning MAC Singles Player of the Week, notched a win at the No. 2 singles spot for the Zips with a 6-1, 6-0 decision against WVU's Kaja Mrgole.

Geier also teamed up with junior Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia) to post a 6-3 win over the Mountaineers' Habiba Shaker and Lyn Yuen Choo in No. 2 doubles action.

Senior Karalina Maksimava (Mogilev, Belarus)/junior Carli Knezevich (Austin, Texas) helped the Zips capture the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Mrgole and Christina Jordan.

At the No. 6 singles spot, Maksimava notched a straight set win (6-4, 6-2) over West Virginia's Yvon Martinez.
