MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Akron Zips women's tennis team dropped a close 4-3 match to West Virginia on Saturday afternoon at Ridgview Racquet Club in Morgantown.
Akron falls to 1-2 on the season, while West Virginia is also 1-2.
"Today was one of the more difficult losses that we have had in my tenure. We started off extremely well in doubles and singles was a fight from the start as we knew it would be. Unfortunately, not everyone seemed willing to fight back. As a team, we were reminded that winning doubles means nothing if you aren't willing to put that same type of energy and effort into singles," said head coach Brandon Padgett.
The Zips earned the doubles point as the pairs of senior Karalina Maksimava (Mogilev, Belarus)/junior Carli Knezevich (Austin, Texas) and junior Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany)/junior Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia) each earned wins.
At the No. 1 doubles spot, Maksimava and Knezevich posted a 6-4 win over the Mountaineers' Kaja Mrgole and Christina Jordan, whie Geier and Blinova topped WVU's Habiba Shaker and Lyn Yuen Choo by a 6-3 count.
Geier and Maksimava also each registered victories in singles play for Padgett's squad.
Geier cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Mrgole at the No. 2 singles spot for Akron.
At the No. 6 singles spot, Maksimava notched a straight set win (6-4, 6-2) over the Mountaineers' Yvon Martinez.
Akron will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 4, with matches against St. Bonaventure (10 a.m.) and Niagara (Time TBA) in Olean, N.Y.
