EVANSTON, Ill. – The Akron women's tennis team dropped the spring season opener to Northwestern by a 7-0 score on Saturday afternoon at the Combe Tennis Center.
The Zips drop to 0-1 on the season, while Northwestern improves to 1-0.
"Tough match for us today, but we knew that going in. As a team, we competed hard and played with passion and heart" said head coach Brandon Padgett. "We showed ourselves that if we continue to work hard for one another and compete hard together, we have the capability of achieving all of our goals!"
Northwestern features three nationally ranked doubles teams and won the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. The No. 3 teams did not finish play, but the Zips duo of junior Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia) and junior Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) led 3-2 against the Wildcats' No. 23 ranked pair of Jillian Rooney/Rheeya Doshi at the time the match was called.
In singles action, Geier won the first set against Doshi at No. 2 singles, 6-1 before dropping the final two sets, 6-3 and 1-0 (10-5). At No. 1 singles, Blinova battled Northwestern's Erin Larner in two tight sets before falling 7-5, 6-4.
"I'm extremely pleased with how competitive we were overall. Ari and Sophia put themselves in position to win their matches at No. 1 and 2 singles and they were also in position to win their doubles match when it was stopped," said Padgett.
Akron will be back in action tomorrow morning as the Zips look for their first win of the season against Chicago State at the Combe Tennis Center in Evanston. The match is slated to start at 11 a.m. ET.
