AKRON, Ohio -- The Akron Zips women's tennis team opens its spring season on Saturday, Jan. 14 with a match at Northwestern slated for 12 p.m. ET.
Northwestern features three nationally ranked doubles teams, led by the pairing of Alex Chatt and Maddie Lipp who are currently ranked No. 6 in the country. Lipp is also ranked as the No. 104 singles player in the nation heading into the spring season.
"We are excited to open the season with such a strong opponent. Northwestern is always in or around the top 25 nationally and they have an exceptionally deep and talented roster that will help prepare us for the MAC season down the road" said head coach Brandon Padgett.
The Zips will also play a neutral site match versus Chicago State on Sunday, Jan. 15, which is slated to begin at 11 a.m. ET.
"This is our first time playing Chicago State since I arrived at Akron and I know their coach well. His team will be highly prepared and ready to fight. We couldn't have asked for a better combination of matches to kick off the season!" said Padgett.
In the initial Oracle/ITA Division I National Rankings of the year that were revealed last week, junior Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) is ranked No. 121 in the nation in singles play.
A team captain, Geier led the way for the team in the fall with a 7-1 record in singles action and participated in the ITA Midwest Regional Championships in October.
Sophomore Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Columbia) and freshman Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) also enjoyed strong fall seasons in singles play. Echeverry posted a 9-2 mark while Pedroso went 10-3 during the fall.
