YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — The University of Akron women's tennis team officially closed out its 2016 fall schedule with competition in the Youngstown State Invitational at the Boardman Tennis Center.

"Today was a good way to close out this tournament," head coach Brandon Padgett said. "We would have liked to have played better in the doubles final, but we played excellent singles today, and all weekend really. Each player finished the weekend 3-1 in singles, which is impressive, and Rita and Shannon finished 3-1 in doubles, making the finals. This was a great way to finish the fall tournament season."

Senior Shannon Newnes (Romford, London) and freshman Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal) placed second in Flight A doubles after dropping a heartbreaking decision in the final round to Toledo's Sidnay Huck and DeeDee Leenabanchong, 6-0.

Pedroso claimed a thrilling 6-3, 6-7 (5), 10-6 triumph over Allison Motea of Oakland to place third in Flight A singles competition while Newnes captured an impressive 7-5, 7-6 (5) win versus UT's Claire Aleck.

Junior Waverly Wituski (Springboro, Ohio) won the consolation final in Flight B singles after defeating Oakland's Amanda Nilsson, 1-6, 6-3, 10-3.

Sophomore Carla Flores (Coahuila, Mexico) placed second overall in Flight C singles action after compiling a 3-1 record over the weekend.

The Zips will resume action on Jan. 14 at Northwestern at 11 a.m. while the squad's MAC schedule starts on March 24 on the road against Toledo (1 p.m.).
