AKRON, Ohio — The University of Akron tennis team will be in Dayton, Ohio this weekend to participate in the Raider Invitational at Wright State University. The two-day event will be held at the Springboro High School and South Regency Tennis Center.

"We have had two very solid weekends of tennis thus far for the fall season, hopefully we can carry that over for this weekend at Wright State," said head coach Brandon Padgett. "We will have another new double combination playing together this weekend, so I am interested in seeing how they perform together. As with each tournament we play, I am looking for progression between each match and each day, with the mindset of working hard to improve in some area of each player's game, each and every time they step onto the court."

Coach Padgett is in his seventh season as head coach at Akron. Padgett's squad returns eight performers from last season and welcomes one newcomer. Team captains Shannon Newnes (Romford, London) and Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) are back as well as senior Karalina Maksimava (Mogilev, Belarus) and 2016 Mid-American Conference Player of the Year in junior Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia).

Akron also returns juniors Carli Knezevich (Austin, Texas) and Waverly Wituski (Springboro, Ohio) along with sophomores Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Columbia) and Carla Flores (Coahuila, Mexico). They're joined by freshman Ana Rita Pedroso (Porto, Portugal).

Four UA student-athletes are scheduled to compete this weekend, including Shannon Newnes, Waverly Wituski, Luisa Echeverry and Carla Flores.

UA hosted the Akron Shootout last weekend, as it was the only fall home match on the schedule for this season. Knezevich went undefeated for the Zips and was named the Zips' Student-Athlete of the Week on Sept. 26, presented by The University of Akron..

The Zips continue the fall component of the season next weekend when they head to the Cleveland State Invitational on Oct. 7-9.
