MASON, Ohio – Luisa Echeverry (Cali, Columbia) advanced herself to the final round in Flight 3 singles to lead the Akron women's tennis team at the Greater Cincinnati Invitational, co-hosted by the University of Dayton and Northern Kentucky University.
"We started off slow in singles on the first day, but that was to be expected," said head coach Brandon Padgett. "We only had four practices prior to playing this tournament, so I knew we would have to play our way into matches. Luisa did an outstanding job making the finals, while playing in a much higher flight than she ever played last season, beating some extremely strong players along the way."
Echeverry defeated Mandy Marchant of Dayton, 6-1, 6-1 before taking down Bowling Green's No. 2 from last season, Polina Radeva, in the quarterfinal round, 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (0). Echeverry captured a 7-6 (5), 6-4 triumph versus Autumn Crossnoe to advance to the finals but ultimately fell to Xavier's Rachael Reichenbach, 6-2, 7-5
In flight 2 singles, Carli Knezevich (Austin, Texas) lost to EKU's Viktorija Demcenkova 6-3, 6-0. Knezevich then overcame UIC's Georgie Sanders, a transfer from Long Beach State, 8-6 in the consolation round. Sophomore Carla Flores (Coahuila, Mexico) fell in both her matches against Zoe Manion (Xavier) and Randi Wind (Valparaiso).
Waverly Wituski (Springboro, Ohio) dropped her first match in Flight 6 singles versus Butler's Nina Bertino but rebounded in the consolation round to Dayton's Anna Delaney, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (4).
In Flight 2 of the doubles round, Echeverry and Wituski claimed a 6-2 victory over Dayton's Jackie Kawamoto and Alex Townsend. The duo then defeated Rachael Reichenbach and Zoe Manion of Xavier, 6-1. Knezevich and Flores also went undefeated in doubles action, taking down Sarah Beth Crowe and Maddie Gilley (Belmont) 6-2, before overcoming Danielle Donahue and Yasmine Xantos (Northern Kentucky) 7-6 (6).
"I am most pleased with our doubles performance, going undefeated with both teams," Padgett continued. "Hopefully this will provide us a solid foundation to build from with these four players. They worked hard and managed the difficult weather and delays exceptionally, and produced solid performances all around."
Due to inclement weather, all additional doubles matches were cancelled.
The Zips will prepare to host its own Akron Shootout on Sept. 23-25. UA will welcome Cleveland State, Siena and Youngstown State.
