Akron Enters Final Round of Bradley Spring Break Invite Seventh Overall

Dallas, Texas – The University of Akron women's golf team fired a 308 (+24) opening round team score at the Bradley Spring Break Invite on Monday. Sophomore Danielle Nicholson (Geneva, Ohio) led the Zips with a 1-under par 70 effort at the 5, 921-yard Brookhaven Country Club course. 

The Zips finished the first round in a tree-way tie for third with Illinois State and Bradley. Northern Illinois leads the team scoring with a 294 (+10), while Southern Illinois is second with a 307 (+23) team tally.

During the initial 18-hole round, Nicholson carded 13 pars, three birdies and two bogeys en route to a second place ranking on the leaderboard.  She entered Monday's second round trailing NIU's Brielle Ward by two strokes (68, -3).

Freshman Allyson Wentworth (Stewartsville, N.J.) was second in scoring for the Zips with a 78 (+7), while senior Alejandra Velasco-Villanueva (Guadalajara, Mexico) and junior Pader Her (Holt, Mich.) carded 80 (+9) scores. Rounding out the Zips scoring was sophomore Makayla Dull (Fremont, Ohio) with an 82 (+11) effort. 

During the second 18-holes, Akron slipped to seventh in team scoring. The Zips posted a 320 (+36) second-round effort en route to a 628 (+60) tournament total.

Again, Nicholson led the scoring with a 76 (+5) for a 146 (+4) 36-hole tally. Nicholson ranks second overall on the leaderboard, tied with Wichita State's Taryn Torgerson. NIU's Ward now leads the field by seven strokes, following the 3-under score with an even-par performance (139, -3). 

Her finished the day ranked 19th overall after cutting four strokes from her opening round score. Her fired a 76 (+5) for a 156 (+15) tournament total. Velasco-Villanueva and Dull followed with 83 (+12) and 85 (+14) scores, respectively. Velasco-Villanueva and Dull rank 34th and 40th with 163 (+21) and 167 (+25) two-round totals. Wentworth rounded out the scoring with a 91 (+20). She currently sits tied at 47th overall. 

The Zips will be back in action on Tuesday for the final round of the Bradley Spring Invite. The final 18-holes is scheduled for a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Fans can follow the action with live scoring available on BirdieFire.
