Women's golf head coach Jenny King announced the 11-event schedule for the 2012-13 season on Tuesday. The schedule includes five fall events, hosted by Illinois State, Louisville, Michigan, Penn State and Ohio, in addition to six spring tournaments. The spring slate will see the Zips play in outings hosted by Western Michigan, Morehead State, Wofford, Eastern Kentucky and Bowling Green before concluding the regular season at the 2013 Mid-American Conference Championships.

Last week, Laura Murray and Sierra Everson played in the 2012 U.S. Amateur qualifier in Detroit. Murray played a solid day, carding a round of 77 and finishing in a four-way tie for the final qualifying spot. Murray went into the four-player playoff, but was eliminated on the first hole. The finish is just one of a number of strong performances from this sophomore-to-be this summer.

Recent graduate Katie Jenior won the Northern Ohio PGA's Stroke Play Series No. 4 event on Monday. Jenior won the 77-player event with a score of 4-under 67 in just her second professional event. She is only the second woman to win a NOPGA event in the history of Northern Ohio. Her round included six birdies and one eagle, which came on the par-5 No. 10. She bogeyed twice and double-bogeyed the par-3 No. 17. She won the event by one stroke.

Freshman Laura Murray continued her solid play during the summer, posting a top-five finish at the fifth event of the TaylorMade Adidas Collegiate Series at the Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio, on July 5. Murray finished tied for fourth place, the top finisher from the Mid-American Conference (16 players). She posted rounds of 75 (+3) and concluded the front nine of the final round with a 4-over 40. The final round was cut short due to weather.

Three Zips, including Amanda Butler, Sara Chaves and Murray, received exciting news on Friday. All three were named 2011-12 Division I All-American Scholars by the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA). The honor was the fourth for Butler and the first for Chaves and Murray. Freshman Laura Murray and freshman-to-be Sierra Everson had a great showing in this year's championship flight of the Women's Ohio State Amateur Championship at the Riviera Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. Both Laura and Sierra advanced to the match play event and posted first-round victories. On Wednesday, Laura fell 3&1 in the second round while Sierra fell 1 UP in her match. Congrats to both on a great showing and finishing in the top 16 of the event!

Akron had a great showing in yesterday's first round flight of the Women's Ohio State Amateur Championship at the Riviera Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. Freshman Laura Murray and freshman-to-be Sierra Everson posted first-round victories in the championship flight of the match play event. Laura and Sienna both won 4 & 3 and will play in the second round today. With a victory this morning, both would advance to the third round, which is scheduled for this afternoon. The Zips will be well represented in today's first round flight in the Women's Ohio State Amateur Championship at the Riviera Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. Freshman Laura Murray qualified as the No. 19 overall seed in the championship flight of the event while freshman-to-be Sierra Everson enters championship flight play as the No. 21 seed. With a win in their matches today, they would advance to the second round tomorrow.

Freshman-to-be Sierra Everson returns to action this week when she takes part in the 13th Annual William "Bill" Dickey Invitational Junior Golf Championship (BDI) at The Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, Ga. The event, named after William "Bill" Dickey, founder of the National Minority Junior Golf Association (NMJGSA) in 1984, is one of the premier 36-hole junior golf championship.
The tournament was implemented for the purpose of identifying college scholarships candidates and providing an Internationally recognized and highly competitive venue for the country's top minority junior golf talent. The Bill Dickey Invitational Junior Golf Championship enables 44 minority junior and high school players with single-digit handicaps to compete in a 36-hole medal play tournament. The men's and women's champions this year will earn an exemption into the PGA Junior Championships.
Play begins today with the Junior Am/Corporate Challenge, with the first and second rounds slated for Tuesday and Wednesday respectively. Click here for more information on the event.

Earlier today in a ceremony at the Student Union Board Room, Amanda Butler, Kristen Hill and Katie Jenior were recognized by The University of Akron Board of Trustees as the first graduating class of the women's golf program. Head coach Jenny King was also recognized for her work in building one of the top programs in the Mid-American Conference, both on the course and in the classroom.

Freshman Laura Murray and freshman-to-be Sierra Everson are taking part in the TaylorMade Adidas Collegiate Series (May 27-28) sponsored by the Game of Your Life Foundation (G.O.L.F.). The series is comprised of some of the top collegiate players in the Midwest. Last week, the first event of out he series took place at the West Course of Firestone C.C. Laura finished the event with a two-round score of 155 (79-76) to finish tied for 16th place while Sierra finished tied for 23rd with a score of 162 (81-81).

Freshman-to-be Frida Fougberg has had a great start to her summer schedule. Frida, a native of Partille, Sweden, has won three events so far. On April 29, she opened her summer schedule with a 10-stroke win at the Gräppås Junior Open thanks to rounds of 73 and 74 (147, +7). She followed that up on May 12 with a win at the Wessberg and Sjödin Open, shooting round of 79 and 76 to win by two strokes (155, +13). She pushed her winning streak to three-straight events with a win at the Resultatlista Skandia Tour Regional #2 - Göteborg on May 26, posting rounds of 76 and 79 to win by two strokes.
