AKRON, Ohio- The Akron softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Dayton on Wednesday afternoon at Lee R. Jackson Field.
UD claimed the first game, 7-3. The Zips rebounded for a 4-2 win in five innings. The game was called as thunderstorms rolled through the area.
The Zips improved to 20-23 overall, while the Flyers fell to 24-19 overall.
In the first game, Dayton scored three runs in the top of the third inning for an early lead.
UA scored its first run in the bottom of the sixth as sophomore DP Kelly Hysong (Beach City, Ohio) knocked her fifth home run out of the park.
The Flyers increased their lead with four runs in the top of the seventh. UA responded with two runs in the bottom of the stanza on back-to-back doubles by senior 2B Anna Tarpley (Jacksonville, Fla.) and sophomore 1B Laura Lakins (Akron, Ohio), but it wasn't enough.
Junior RHP Kooper Vertz (Dilsboro, Ind.) took the loss. She pitched 5.0 innings, fanning a season-high five batters.
In the nightcap, Akron jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning on runs by senior C Alyssa Nicholas (Cortland, Ohio) and senior OF Savannah Fruin (Delray Beach, Fla.), who each reached on singles.
In the bottom of the fourth, UA added two more runs as lead-off batter Fruin notched her 32nd career home run. Lakins hit a single, scoring junior OF Taylor Kirian (New Riegel, Ohio) for a 4-0 edge.
Dayton scored two runs in the top of the fifth to come within two, 4-2.
The game was called after five complete innings.
Vertz captured the win (3-3 overall). She went the distance, striking out three and walking two.
Akron hosts rival Kent State in the Crystal Clinic Wagon Wheel Challenge on April 21-22 at Lee R. Jackson Field. The teams will play a single game on Friday, April 21, at 3 p.m.
