MOREHEAD, Ky.-- The Akron softball split a pair of games on Saturday in Morehead, Ky.
In the opener, Akron handed Oakland (7-7 overall) its seventh loss of the season in a 3-1 victory. The Zips (10-12 overall) finished the afternoon with a 1-0 loss to host Morehead State (12-7 overall).
In the first game, Akron jumped on the board first from a two-run home run from senior OF Savannah Fruin (Delray Beach, Fla.), which gave the Zips an early 2-0 lead.
Fruin's home run was the 26th of her career. She moved into the fourth spot on Akron's all-time career list.
The Zips added a security run in the top of the sixth inning when senior catcher Alyssa Nicholas (Cortland, Ohio) hit an RBI single that gave the Akron a 3-0 lead.
Oakland added a lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning from an RBI single.
Freshman lefty Lexie Handley (Mogadore, Ohio) pitched a complete game, earning her ninth victory of the season. She struck out a career-high 12 batters and walked one.
In nightcap against Morehead State, the game remained scoreless through seven innings.
The Zips threatened in the top of the fifth as junior 2B Caitlin Gambone (Canton, Ohio) hit a two-out double but was stranded.
The Eagles scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh from a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 victory.
Junior Nicole Best (Broadview Heights, Ohio) started and lasted 1.1 innings. She struck out one and walked two batters. Handley relieved her in the bottom of the second inning. She pitched 5.1 innings, fanning one and walking two batters.
The Zips return to action on Tuesday, March 21, with doubleheader at Youngstown State at 3 p.m.
