THIS WEEK
Akron closes out weekend non-conference action with two games in Morehead, Ky., on Saturday, March 18. The Zips face Morehead State at 11 a.m., followed by Oakland at 3 p.m. Both games will be played at MSU's University Field.

MEET THE ZIPS
The Akron Zips, under the guidance of 11th-year head coach Julie Jones, stand 9-11 overall after going 1-1 last week at the weather-shortened Cherry Blossom Classic. The Zips return 10 letterwinners, including four starters. UA welcomes four freshmen.

After 20 contests, junior OF Ashley Sims (Brooksville, Fla.), is the Zips' top hitter, batting .371 with 20 runs, 22 hits, and 23 stolen bases. Junior OF Savannah Fruin (Delray Beach, Fla.) follows at .352 with 19 RBI, 19 hits, and three home runs.

In the circle, freshman lefty Lexie Handley (Mogadore, Ohio) has a 3.50 ERA. She stands 8-5 overall, throwing 72.0 innings with 65 strikeouts and 26 walks. Junior Nicole Best (Broadview Heights, Ohio) is 1-3 overall and has a 4.71 ERA. She has pitched 38.2 innings with 13 strikeouts and 21 walks.

SCOUTING MOREHEAD STATE
The Eagles, under sixth-year head coach David Williams, stand 11-7 overall after sweeping Radford. Sophomore Allison Rager is the Eagles' top hitter, batting .386 with 22 hits and 16 runs in 18 starts. In the circle, junior Chelsea McManaway is 6-3 overall with a .75 ERA. She's thrown 65 innings, fanning 94 and walking 33 batters.


SERIES VS. MOREHEAD STATE
In series action, Akron and Morehead State have met eight times with the Zips holding a 6-2 all-time series advantage. In the last meeting between the two teams in 2012, Akron picked up a 6-4 victory at the Cougar Classic.

SCOUTING OAKLAND
The Grizzlies, under fifth-year head coach Connie Miner, stand 7-6 overall after going 1-3 last weekend at the UofM Softball Tournament. Sophomore OF Mikayela Marciniak is the Grizzlies' top hitter, batting .359 with 14 hits, 3 runs, and 7 RBI. In the circle, senior Erin Kownacki is 4-2 with a .86 ERA. She's thrown 42 innings, fanning 26 and walking three batters.

SERIES VS. OAKLAND
In series action, Akron and Oakland met only once. In 2002, the Zips picked up a 7-6 victory in the Worth Challenge.

LAST ACTION
The Zips split a pair of games at the weather-shortened Cherry Blossom Classic on March 12. UA fell to Cornell, 8-7 in eight innings, before shutting out host George Mason, 8-0.

For the tournament, junior SS Jenna Jones (Fulton, Ill.) batted .375 with three hits, three runs, and five RBI. Senior Alyssa Nicholas (Cortland, Ohio) batted .500 with three hits, two runs, and an RBI.

IN THE MAC STATS
As of March 13, redshirt junior CF Ashley Sims leads all players in the Mid-American Conference in stolen bases (23) and third in runs scored (20). In the circle, freshman Lexie Handley is first in wins (8), and third in strikeouts (65).

FRUIN HITS HOME RUN MILESTONE
With her home run against UNC Greensboro, senior OF Savannah Fruin recorded her 25th career home run. She moved into the fifth spot on Akon's all-time career list.

HEAD COACH JULIE JONES
In her 11th season at Akron, head coach Julie Jones has mentored 17 All-MAC honorees, five NCAA All-Mideast Region selections, 28 Academic All-MAC student-athletes, eight Academic All-District selections, and two Academic All-Americans, the 2014 MAC Pitcher of the Year, and the 2016 prestigious MAC Nan Harvey award winner. With the 1-0 shutout of Fort Wayne in the final game of the Black & Gold Tournament, Jones recorded her 250th win at Akron. She is just TWO wins shy of 500 for her career.
