AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron men's soccer team finalized its 2017 schedule on Friday with the addition of an Oct. 13 home match against Southern Illinois Edwardsville (SIUE).
The Zips will host the Cougars in a 7:30 p.m. contest at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field in the first meeting between the two schools since a 2-1 Akron victory on Sept. 2, 2012, at the Ameritas Classic in Omaha, Neb.
SIU Edwardsville reached the third round of the NCAA Tournament in 2016, advancing past Michigan State in the first round and Butler in the second round on penalty kicks before dropping a 2-1 decision at Wake Forest. Overall, the Cougars posted a 10-5-7 ledger, including a 4-1-3 mark en route to claiming the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament title.
In 2017 the Zips' 12-match season-ticket package features visits to FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field by Washington from the Pac-12, Michigan State and Penn State from the Big Ten and Notre Dame from the ACC. A very fan-friendly slate features seven of Akron's 12 home games taking place on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.
Akron is set to return seven starters, including all Mid-American Conference performers in seniors Pau Belana (Barcelonia, Catalonia), Sam Gainford (Liverpool, England) and Stuart Holthusen (Auckland, New Zealand), junior Ben Lundt (Berlin, Germany) and sophomore Nick Hinds (Plantation, Fla.) in 2017 from a squad that captured MAC regular season and tournament titles en route to advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the 31st time in program history on the strength of an overall record of 13-6-3 during the 2016 campaign.
