Aiken, S.C. – The Akron men's golf team posted a final round 293 (+13) en route to a 12th place finish with an 878 (+38) 54-hole total at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate hosted by South Carolina Aiken on Tuesday.
Sophomore Elliott Grayson (Shelby, N.C.) led the Zips at the 6,617-yard, par-70 Palmetto golf course, climbing three places on the leaderboard with a third consecutive 72 (+2) 18-hole round. Grayson used eight pars, six bogeys, and four birdies for the 2-over tally and finished the 54-hole event 23rd overall with a 216 (+6) total.
Senior J.B. Williams (Danville, Ky.) followed in scoring for the Zips with a 4-over par 74 final round. He finished the tournament with a 219 (+9) total, landing 34th overall. Williams advanced three spots on the leaderboard after carding three birdies during the final round and nine total in 54-holes.
Junior George Baylis (Ascot, England) also moved up in the individual standings, elevating six spots with a 74 (+4) final round effort. Baylis completed the tournament with a 10-over par 220, while collecting eight birdies in three rounds.
Sophomore Jacob Appleby (North Canton, Ohio) showed the most improvement, climbing 16 spots to finish 61st overall with a 226 (+3) total. Appleby posted a career-best five birdies on the final 18-holes, while senior Zach Gollwitzer (Ballwin, Mo.) rounded out Akron's scoring with a 233 (+23) tournament total.
Clemson overcame a three-stroke deficit to claim the team championship, while second place Virginia's Derek Bard and Danny Walker earned top honors. Bard finished the 54-hole event at 6-under par with a 204 total, claiming medalist honors, and Walker finished runner-up at 207 (-3).
The Akron men's golf team will be back in action on Monday and Tuesday, March 19-20 at the Seahawk Intelegiate playing the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.
